History of Apollo
Last Updated: July 15, 2003
Formed in 1981, Apollo came into existence after a small group of individuals came together with an idea to form an athletic social group. The idea was to fulfill the needs of interested people in the Calgary area with sports and social activities. Four people attended the first meeting.
During that first year an invitation was extended to a similar group of people in Edmonton to play volleyball in Calgary. The first Western Cup was born. Incorporated in August 1982, the name Apollo - Friends in Sports was selected.
Since that time Apollo has grown and expanded in many ways. It continues to follow the sporting and social trends of the community. We now have more than 400 members. The Western Cup tournaments serve to provide activities for more than 400 people from across Canada and the United States. Our regular seasonal sporting activities include volleyball, bowling, curling, badminton, slow pitch and outdoor pursuits. New leagues such as golf, tennis and lawn bowling compliment the already huge spectrum of activities offered by Apollo. It is unlikely that anyone could have predicted that the Western Cup would become one of the largest gay and lesbian sporting events in Canada but as we celebrate more than 20 years of Western Cup, that is exactly what it has become.
It is our sincere desire that during the past 20 years Apollo has been able to offer our community an atmosphere of fellowship and support through the mediums of sport and recreation. Naturally we hope that Apollo will continue to expand and grow into the millennium and we look forward to our 25th anniversary in 2007.
